“When I first became a single parent, I was excited and relieved to discover there was a supportive charity dedicated to single parents. I hoped to meet parents in similar situations to me and enjoy days out together with our children. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a local group in our area at the time.

It was disappointing to feel that opportunity was missing, so later I decided to start my own group instead. My only regret is that I didn’t do it sooner. It’s been lovely meeting the parents who have joined, and seeing people connect through shared experiences.

As a group, we enjoy a mixture of relaxed meet-ups, play dates, coffee mornings, and family days out. It can sometimes be tricky arranging activities that suit everyone because of the different ages of the children, but it’s been lovely seeing members meet up independently with their children and build friendships outside of the organised events too. We’ve enjoyed trips to the beach and the park together, as well as evenings out where parents can relax, catch up, and support one another.

I had to take a break from running the group for health reasons, which made me realise even more how valuable these connections are. It’s been really special to bring the group together again and reconnect with parents old and new.

I volunteer because I know how isolating single parenthood can sometimes feel. I wanted to help create a space where parents could meet others who understand their circumstances, support one another, and build friendships. It’s rewarding to see parents who may have felt alone gain confidence, friendships, and a sense of community.”
