We’re incredibly proud to support our fundraiser, Grace, as she takes on an independent challenge walking 6.5 miles along the Llangollen Canal on August 1st.
Below she shares the heartfelt story of her late grandmother Ellen and explains why she is raising vital funds for Gingerbread to support single-parent families.
Grace Story – In Grandma’s Memory
“My name is Grace, and I plan on fundraising for Gingerbread by completing a sponsored walk along the Llangollen Canal on the 1st of August, all in memory of my grandma, Ellen.
My grandma was very special to me and was one of my favourite people in the world. Sadly, five years ago this June, she passed away, leaving our family heartbroken. Over the last five years I have really struggled with missing my grandma and have thought of her every single day. I wanted to do something truly special in her memory for a charity I know would be close to her heart.
My Grandma was a single mother to three children, my dad, my auntie Doll and my uncle Kenny, and was an amazing parent who did everything she could for her family. However, they struggled a lot and didn’t have much support available to them, due to both the stigma towards single parents at the time and the general lack of support available. Despite this, my grandma did absolutely everything she could and was incredibly passionate about single parents getting more support.
By fundraising for Gingerbread, I hope to support people like my grandma who are raising their children on their own and would benefit from more support. I spent a long time with my auntie choosing a charity that we believe would be special to my grandma, and I hope any money I raise will make a big difference to single parents in her memory.”
