As an organisation, we’re really concerned about the impact of the government cutting £20 a week from Universal Credit. Research we carried out during the pandemic showed that single parents faced a unique set of challenges around childcare, employment and homeworking (https://www.gingerbread.org.uk/policy-campaigns/publications-index/caring-without-sharing-final-report/).

We know the cut to Universal Credit will hit millions of household budgets and polling by Save the Children shows that more than half of single parents on UC don’t think they can live on £20 less per week. Single parents will be unable to afford food, pay essential bills and buy clothes, books and toys for their children. This is why Gingerbread, along with other charities, are campaigning against this devastating cut to Universal Credit.

We are currently collecting stories from single parents who will be affected by UC cut – if you’re happy to share your story, please email campapign@gingerbread.org.uk with how the cut will impact you and your family.

    Hi Natalie,

I’m Vee, a moderator on the forum.  I hope you find it a supportive space. Have you had a look at the Gingerbread Groups for single parent groups around Brighton? If there isn’t a group near you, you’d be welcome to set up a group in your local area – we provide support and advice to help you along the way.

    Best wishes,
    Gingerbread Vee

    Hi Lawren_1,

I’m Vee and I’m a forum moderator at Gingerbread. Great to see you posting on here and I hope you find it a helpful, supportive space. As well as speaking to single parents on here, I was wondering if you have had a look at our single parent groups? There are a few running in and around North/Central London that you could join: https://www.gingerbread.org.uk/community/single-parent-groups/groups. The search function will help find the group(s) closest to you.

    Best wishes,

    Vee
