Emma, Group Lead of Haverford West Gingerbread Group, with her family.
“I decided to become a volunteer with Gingerbread after realising what a lack of support there was in my area for single-parent families. Being a single parent comes with its own challenges, and can be isolating at times. I wanted to create a safe and welcoming environment for single-parent families, and a place for children to see other families just like theirs.
I’m happy to be able to contribute something to my local community. Watching the group grow and friendships flourish gives me a real sense of satisfaction, and I hope my group members know they have somewhere to turn if they need support and that they’re never alone.
It’s lovely to see the children building bonds and feeling less alone, knowing they have friends who also come from one parent families. This can have a big impact on children, and was another reason why I started my group. I wanted my children to see that families come in all shapes and sizes, and that’s totally normal.
Being a volunteer with Gingerbread is a fantastic experience. It’s great to feel part of a community of volunteers across the UK, with similar values and goals; people who understand how hard it can be at times as a single parent and who are passionate about supporting others. I’ve learned a lot through my role as volunteer group lead, and I’m excited to continue growing my group and connecting with more single-parent families in my area.”
