Why your voice matters – Tori’s story

Posted 13 August 2025

Single parent Tori, shares why she’s proud to be a Gingerbread campaigner.

“I joined Gingerbread back in January 2024 as part of a campaign group focused on raising issues ahead of the General Election; it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made – after having my beautiful children, of course!

With over 2 million single-parent families in the UK, I was tired of navigating a world that wasn’t designed for the way my family works and I wanted to make a difference.

From a broken child maintenance system to unaffordable childcare, from inadequate welfare support to employment rights and healthcare inequality, I believe single should never mean second-best.

But currently in the UK it does, because those who hold power often have no lived experience of the unique challenges single parents face, they subscribe to outdated, and frankly insulting, stereotypes of who we are, and make decisions that rarely help our families thrive.

Being part of Gingerbread’s Champions Network is an opportunity to add your voice to campaigns that are making a real difference, to put the challenges facing families like yours firmly on the government’s agenda, and ensure our wonderful children have every opportunity to thrive.”
