Helpline Adviser for Single Parents

£24,764 per annum
Full time, 35 hours per week, London
12 month contract (with the possibility of extension to permanent - funding dependent)

We are looking for an enthusiastic adviser to join our expert team delivering advice to single parents across England and Wales on the Gingerbread freephone advice helpline. Following training, you will provide one off telephone advice to single parents on a range of issues including dealing with a break-up, going back to work, sorting out child maintenance and contact arrangements for children and benefit or tax credit issues. 


We are looking for someone with minimum one year’s recent experience of working as an adviser (paid or voluntary) with a good basic knowledge of welfare benefits, tax credits and welfare reform. You must be a quick learner, an excellent communicator with the ability to work in a sometimes pressured helpline environment and a passion for helping single parents.


You will be well supported through our systems for staff development and supervision.  Working alongside your advice and information colleagues, including more senior Advice Workers, you will have the opportunity to learn in depth advice skills and grow in your knowledge.

Project Officer

£24,666 pa FTE (actual £19,733 per annum)
28 hours per week

Gingerbread provides expert advice, practical support and campaigns to improve the lives of single parent families. We work with single parents, including teenage parents, who face substantial barriers to entering education, training or work, to help them gain confidence and skills, and become ready to progress into work or further learning.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on our training programmes, including an ESF project in RCT and the Lottery funded Growing Together Project, an innovative programme working in partnership with Charter Housing Association

As Project Officer you will use your skills to:

  • Recruit single parents to support our programme including planning and attending engagement events
  • Provide guidance and ongoing support
  • Deliver training and workshops to single parents
  • Support accreditation and verification activities
  • Arrange work experience and/ volunteering placements
  • Provide coaching and pre- and post-programme support

 The ideal candidate will have:

  • experience of supporting disadvantaged individuals to commence  the transition to progress towards paid work, education or training
  • relevant and recent IT skills particularly in updating and maintaining databases and participant records
  • experience of delivering training and workshops
  • an understanding of the issues affecting single parents, including young single parents
  • excellent communications skills to inspire single parents and work in partnerships
  • proven ability to work to deadlines, demonstrate strong attention to detail and understand the importance of meeting contractual targets

The post is based in Cardiff with travel to our regional delivery areas, including Rhondda Cynon Taff, Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Caerphilly and Newport.

The projects will be supporting single parents from across Greater Manchester in employment and skills opportunities.

As Project Officer you will use your skills to:

  • Recruit single parents to support our programme including planning and attending engagement events
  • Provide guidance and ongoing support
  • Deliver training and workshops to single parents
  • Support accreditation and verification activities
  • Arrange work experience and / or volunteering placements
  • Provide coaching and pre- and post-programme support
