At a time when the country is already reeling from soaring living costs and record inflation levels, today’s news of Boris Johnson’s resignation has only served to reinforce the uncertainty felt by those communities worst hit by the cost of living crisis. In the grip of unprecedented energy bills, benefit cuts and the prospect of further price hikes in the autumn, it is no wonder that we are seeing soaring demand for Gingerbread’s services.
Before the current political turbulence hit the headlines, Gingerbread’s research had seen the trust in our country’s leaders was in question, with 93% of single parents feeling their families were being left behind by the Government.
With more and more families living in poverty, and a devastating lack of support and resources for those most in need, we need a government who will recognise the gravity of the situation, and who will provide urgent and tangible support.
We would urge leadership candidates to focus on the issues that are affecting millions of families across the UK every day, and hope that the new leader will endeavour to prove to single parents that they will not be forgotten, left behind or discriminated against by policymakers.
