    Hi everyone,

My ex partner is moving out of our house on 16th December, and I’ll need to apply for universal credit. Do I need to wait until he leaves or can I apply now? It says it takes around 5 weeks and I’m panicking how I’m going to pay the bills if I have to wait for 5 weeks from when he leaves. Especially with xmas in between.

    Thanks

I would apply now as a single person . Also you maybe able to get an advance , which is a loan payable over 10/12 months . Also moving out on Dec 16th hopefully this definitely happens  but u dont have to wait for him to go . Also it is crucial you phone up council tax office as this is separate as you would need to claim council tax benefits and make sure you mention you are single as you will get i believe 25% discounted from bill( single person allowance).

Are you renting or is it a mortgage?

Thank you, I was worried if I applied now it might seem fraudulent as he hasn’t gone yet!

It’s a mortgage so I know I wont get any help with that but I think I should be just about ok. I will definitely get in touch with council tax
