    Hi everyone,

Total newbie here. I just need some advice please as I am a bit worried about finances etc. I have 2 children aged 13 and 11. Both have autism and I claim carers allowance & income support for my youngest. He is in receipt of DLA high rate care, low rate mobility and I get the disability premium on the child tax credits.

I am starting university in September, have applied for student finance – currently waiting for that to update. Does anyone know where I stand with benefits? I know I’ll have to close my carers allowance which will also close the income support as I have read if your at university, you can’t be a carer too. I am planning on closing my housing benefit and council tax claim as I really do not want to trigger anything to go over to universal credit.

Will my student finance change the amount of tax credits I receive? Will it trigger a change to universal credit? I have read on a few groups that students who are on universal credit dont get anything as they class the maintenance loans as income. If that were too happen, I don’t think i’d be able to go university as i’d be in the minus every month.

Any advice? Thank you in advance.

    Hi

I’ve just posted something along these lines!  I don’t even know where to start looking for a course!  So worried about taking a leap for myself incase it mucks up my finances and leaves me in a financially uncomfortable position.

How did you find your course?

Hope someone pops up with more advice.

    Hiya!

So I started my degree in September. I was on income support, carers allowance and was receiving housing benefit and council tax benefit as well as my tax credits. Since starting, I had to close the carer’s allowance as they say if your in full time education then you’re not entitled to claim carers allowance and if you don’t claim carers allowance you’re not entitled to income support. Also you’re not allowed to claim any benefits whilst receiving student loans anyway. So I closed my claim. Im still waiting for the housing benefit to recalculate but I had already budgeted in paying full rent incase I wasnt entitled to anything. Supposed to be exempt from paying council tax because I am a full time student.

Luckily, I am still receiving my tax credits which is a massive relief as I would have struggled and would have had to get a job if I was just getting student loans. Are you looking at doing a degree? You know you don’t have to go to university if you were looking at counselling. Are you already level 3 educated? Because if not, you’ll need a level 3 before you start looking at university.

In terms of finances, I am 7k a year better off with student loans and tax credits than I was under the benefit system. I have 2 accounts – one for my bills and one for my allowance that I pay myself each month. I have my student loans and tax credits etc in bank 1 and 1st of each month I give myself an allowance that pays for food shopping, my travel to get to uni, my kids lunch monies etc and anything extra like say I fancied taking them the cinema one day, etc. Once it’s gone though, I’ll wait until the following month – I never dip in.

If you have any other questions, I’m happy to help.
