    Hi all,

I am seriously thinking about going to uni to do a HE course (1 year) then onto a social work course. I am a single parent to 4 kids ages from 7-16, I am worried about finances and how much worse I could end up being, I was made redundant in August and  started to claim UC in October, I applied for uni for sept 2020 but chickened out just for fear of the unknown, basically I just need to know that with the loans etc I could survive on the bare minimum, and still keep a roof over our heads, any advice or someone who is already doing it got any tips would be greatly appreciated…thanks

I have 4 kids aged 7-15 and am currently studying part time for my masters degree whilst working full-time. You will get a student loan to cover course fees and also a maintenance loan to cover some living expenses.  As you’re on universal credit this maybe affected by the maintenance part of the loan you receive, I receive tax credits but they are unaffected by my student loan.  I also get a grant from the government (I’m in Wales i think they are more generous than England).  Speak to the uni they will be able to advise you of anything you maybe entitled too and have a webchat with the HMRC they will be able to give you information on the impact on your universal credit.

    Good luck
