I recently lost my job (within the corporate world), which is fine as it was actually a huge strain on my time and impacted my relationship with my four year old. I’ve always had a dream of running a small catering business which would allow me to be more flexible with my time (and be my own boss). Local events/festivals, that kind of thing.
I have some savings which could be put towards the start up, a business loan would be required to fund the rest though.
What I’m curious to know is if things were quiet over the winter months when events aren’t being held, would I get some help towards my housing? (I currently rent).
I have been told that I will be assigned a work coach with Universal Credit who will be able to talk me through (also looking into the New Enterprise Allowance through the Job Centre), however what with the current circumstances, it may be some time before I get to speak with someone.
Currently I’m just enjoying the unexpected time with my daughter, but considering future plans and if this could be a viable option.
I get help from my daughters father, so would have some income to cover me during the quiet months too. I would obviously need to factor in business loans, equipment hire and insurance.
Keen to hear the thoughts of anyone self employed.
