My wife and I mare currently going through mediation to agree on financial separation. We jointly own the family home and are planning to sell. As I left the family home over a year ago I’ll likely be liable for capital gains tax when we sell, but the mediator has asked me to find out what that figure will be to allow us to agree on the house split percentage.

My problem is that I don’t really know where to start or who to ask to assist with this. I’ve tried our mortgage advisor and spent hours looking at Google, but can’t find a straight answer. Has anyone been through this and able to offer any advice?

I recently researched this as am thinking of moving out.

    Two ways to find out:

    1.  Government website calculator; works out your CGT, when you enter your details.

    2.  Paying a tax advisor for CHT advice.

    Hope this helps.

Government have stitched this one so it is more difficult for separting couples.
