Hi, Court costs over a dispute accessing my kids with my ex partner have spiralled out of control. The case was delayed twice due to Covid and cost have almost doubled from the original quote. I’ve also not had any work due to Covid and can no longer borrow any more money to proceed with legal representation. The trial took place last week and I am now awaiting the judges decision. Just after any recommendations on the best way to proceed as I now have to represent myself – any best places to go to for advice/support on self representation or ways to get legal aid or assistance? I’m anxious about being so clueless and alone  for the final stages of this lengthy and important case. Any advice very gratefully received! Many thanks.

    Hi gtaylor

I’m Michelle one of the Moderators here.  It may be worth checking whether you’re eligible for legal aid.  Here’s a link to a service that may be able to explore this option for you:

Civil Legal Advice Helpline on 0345 345 4 345 https://www.gov.uk/civil-legal-advice to check to see if you qualify for legal aid and for details of local family law solicitors that provide advice and representation funded by legal aid

I hope that might help a bit

    Kind regards

    Michelle

Thanks Michelle, but I used that link previously and it seems I’m not eligible for legal aid through this route – despite putting in my very low finances it asked for my new partners employment/income details – despite the fact that she covers all accommodation and living expenses for us  and has no spare money now due to supporting me financially through this to date – the system does not seem to take this into account.. not sure if I’m missing something or does that sound familiar to you? Thanks.

I had the same thing, funded myself ran out of cash then Legal Aid then that was stopped for family court (you can stab someone and could get it back in the day but if you are fighting for a child it was pulled) so I represented myself a couple of times.   Not sure what the situation with it is now.  Hopefully you can get it if not be brave, fearless and represent yourself.

Sorry to hear you had the same problem, hope things went ok for you. I don’t think things have changed much sadly. But useful to know that maybe my best bet is to accept no help is likely/possible – and I just need to focus on representing myself as best I can.. and good to know I’m not alone at least! Thanks very much.
