I lost my job during the pandemic due to school closures and a unhappy boss. I continued to homeschool because my daughter is susceptible to chest infections and it wasn’t worth taking the risk of her getting covid. I was fine for money for a while but now I’m running out. I was getting  CTC but was told to claim UC as I’d get extra and be better off. I didn’t realise I was under the obligation to look for work. I thought I’d get the child element of UC regardless like CTC,  now I’m unable to claim nothing and the work coach I had wouldn’t listen to my situation and said I’d have to close my claim and I am not entitled to the child element unless  I look for work. Is this correct. I can’t go back on CTC either.

That’s my understanding that you have to be looking for employment. I home educate my 3 kids, work part time residentially as a support worker and get universal credit. There are loads of options if you can think creatively, self employment working from home? Remote jobs in the eve/mornings. I mean it does assume you have endless amounts of energy which I know I don’t! I wish the government could see how much money I am saving them by home educating my child instead of costing them!

I suggest you speak to citizens advice and if you are in touch with your local LEA officer maybe speak to them?
