Hi. My 17 yr old son has left college but doesn’t know what to do yet. I am claiming universal credit at the min and iam a single parent. I’m very worried about how this will affect my benefits in the near future and we live in private rented accommodation and not sure how I will afford my rent, bills etc. Can someone please help me. Thankyou.

    Tricky perhaps on a Sunday.

My understanding is you will continue to get child ben if they are in full time ed or training. So if he went on some other training course this would apply.

Telephone appointment or online with Citizens Advice tomorrow morning to run through it?

Approach your energy supplier straight away and apply for the warm front grant to get 150 pounds odd towards your yearly bills.

Also would approach your local council as they are doing emergency Covid grants.

Thankyou so much for your advice. I will sort out those things tomorrow. I don’t know if he wants to go into work but in the meantime i didn’t know where I stood.

Pleasure. Sorry I can’t say more of use. Must be a shock. My DD is sixteen and they often change their minds at this stage, so tricky age isn’t it.

Would try to square as much alternative income as you can at the moment.

I don’t even know if you need to tell UC. I’ve never been on UC so I don’t know.

Send him down to the Job Centre this week? But not before you have got the info from the CAB.

Warm Home discount it is called. I know British Gas did it. Needs to be done soon as it is first come first served. So that is something you could even do tonight.
