Hi, I am a single parent (shared custody-I have my child about 60% of the time). I am currently self employed. I don’t earn much and currently receive Working tax credit, Child tax credit and Housing benefit as I rent a 2 bed house.  This couple with what I earn means I can live and only occasionally go overdrawn.   I have been offered a full time job and it looks like the yearly wage would be 20 or 21K with presumably deductions for tax off of this.  Before I accept this job I need to be sure I would still receive some kind of help as my rent, bills, car etc,. mean I need £18k a year just to survive. Universal Credit is supposedly arriving here in the autumn. I’ve tried the online benefits calculator but of course that doesn’t understand my circumstances and so just confirms what I already know.  I am grateful for any advice. Thank you.

Hi and congratulations on the job offer! I’m single mum of 3kids, work 30hours weekly (employed) and receive child benefit and child tax credits, I don’t have any childcare costs. So I would maybe use the child tax credit calculator online and see if that’s helpful in giving you an idea. I’ve also done some self employed work along side my employment but I find it does confuse the tax credit system and obviously you need to plan ahead for the tax bill arriving. My property is mortgaged so I don’t get help with housing benefit, maybe someone else can offer advice from that perspective. Good luck in the position should you choose to accept it 😁

Thank you for the replies!  In about a week I meet the manager and she will go through what they can offer me in regard to hours and wages. Being self employed is precarious but it fitted in with having my sone when he was a toddler and young kid but he’s now 13 and getting independent. I’ve heard the Tories are going to make it awful for self employed people under UC. I think I’m gonna go for this job and hope I can do OK.
