I am seeking legal advice tomorrow from a solicitor to start a separation from my husband. I have had to flee our home with my two children as he had become abusive and I was scared. What advice do I need? What questions should I ask?

Explain the situation and they will probably tell you what you need to know.

Ask about what you may be entitled to financially. Also, about childcare arrangements. If you are scared about the children being around him I think they can advise on options on restricting contact.

I hope you are ok. Well done for being brave and making that important step to make sure you and your children are safe.

    Hi Masa,

You could also contact the Freephone 24 hour National Domestic Helpline on 0808 2000 247. The helpline can give support, help and information to women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence. The Helpline is staffed by female helpline support workers and volunteers, and all calls are completely confidential.

You may also find it helpful to contact our Single Parent Helpline. We have a team of trained advisers that can advise on a range of issues, including checking what financial help you are entitled to, housing options and contact arrangements. They do get busy and it’s likely you’ll need to hold to get through, but calls are free from mobiles and landlines. Here are the contact details:

    I hope that helps.

Thank you for your replies. The solicitor was amazing and I got all the answers I needed at the moment.
