    Hi,

I am new here and just found I’m pregnant, unfortunately the father had decided he no longer wants to be with me.

I need some advice when it comes to maternity pay and how to afford it. I earn a good wage and own my house and car. I will get full pay for 16 weeks, after that I’m on SMP for 23 weeks. The SMP won’t be enough to cover my monthly expenses and after doing a calculation online the only benefit I’m entitled to is child benefit. How does everyone manage to do this alone? Is there another benefit I’m missing that I can claim? I only have £500 in savings and no other children so will be buying everything from scratch.

    thanks in advance

Depending on your income you may not be entitled to anything other than child benefit and tax credits which may be universal credit. If ur ex partner isn’t willing to support his child then there is child maintenance and I would do that as soon as baby is born. Hope this helps x

Thank you for replying Naomi. Sorry for my ignorance but how will I know if I’m entitled to tax credits? Do I contact the CSA as soon as the baby is born for the maintenance? I don’t think he will support voluntarily as I found out after I told him that he’s engaged to be married. He hasn’t spoken to me since last Friday so I’m the dark on where his head is at.
