I have recently split from my husband. We have still been living together still but I have managed to find a flat and have been accepted. I am starting to really worry about money. I work full time but will still struggle financially when I move out. I have done the universal credits calculator and that says that i am entitled to a decent amount which will make moving out affordable. I just have some questions..
1. How accurate is the UC calculator? 2. What happens if it is 50/50 custody? Will I still get UC because I won’t have my son full time.
3. When is the best time to apply? I now know the address of the flat, can I apply now before I move in? I wouldn’t currently be entitled to anything I don’t think as me and my ex work full time.
The one thing I would say is tackle things one thing at a time. Divorce and contact hearings can take a good while to come through. By the time that they do hopefully flat issues/Uc etc will be more stable.
Had you considered also joining your local credit union? If you work in the neighbourhood there is usually one. Not only is it an ethical way of saving but they can provide loans that you may not be able to get from another provider. In the early days of splitting from my ex years ago now it was a very useful way of getting back on my feet, financially.
