Hi, I am pregnant and recently single. I’m absolutely devistated about the turn of events which have lead me to be in this situation I never thought I’d be in. I have traditional values when it comes to naming a child with the fathers surname, but I fear the father might even deny this baby is his. Regardless, I know the baby is his and I would like the baby to have his surname as nothing can change the fact he is the baby’s father… Can I put his surname on the birth certificate without him giving permission or being present? Can the child be lawfully registered with his surname without his permission?

Hi, I’m sorry you have found yourself in this situation.

if you are married to the baby’s father you will be able to add him to the birth certificate, and from my experience are encouraged to have father’s surname given to baby. If you’re not married and the father doesn’t want to attend when registering baby he won’t be added to the birth certificate unless you add this at a later date. From what I believe you can name your baby what ever you want including surname.

Thanks for your reply. So in theory I could give the baby his surname (even though we aren’t married) but without the father present the fathers name won’t appear on the birth certificate? Is that right?

    Thanks for your help!
