    Hi Everybody,

Has anyone tried to share a home with another parent and child/children?

It seems like a great idea with rising rent in London and the potential support from another parent (shared childcare responsibilities etc.), however, it’s hard to know until you’ve experienced it.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this?

    Thanks.

    Gabrielle

I haven’t got any experience of sharing with another parent, and I was really keen to find someone to share with when I first became a single mum, but it doesn’t seem that popular in the UK. I did live in a 3 bedroom house though with a couple of friends until my daughter was 1 and a half. There were a few difficulties as not everyone who doesn’t have kids can accept and understand the additional noise, but it kind of worked for us temporarily.

In Denmark they have community houses where everyone has their own little flats but they have huge communal places and kitchen and they take it in turns to cook for everyone and help each other out with childcare etc… It’s such a shame we don’t have this here! We are so isolated and if only we had this it’d solve many issues that single parents face.

And I just came across an article about a platform in the US that connects single mums to house share, it would be such a great idea to have something like this in the UK! https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20190827-the-single-mums-who-live-together-on-mommunes

You could find local single mums groups and ask if anyone is looking to house share, you might find someone!

    Good luck!
