I have been a single mum on a low income for nearly 14 years. My has petitioned for a divorce which I cannot afford to defend. My dad (a pensioner himself) helped as far as possible with a solicitor but nothing progressed. I want a financial settlement my X wants a clean break from paying maintenance until my children reach 18. ( 2years, ). He has emailed me with a paltry offering of some funds which will decline to zero when  the youngest turns 18 (4 years). My biggest concern is losing the house that I currently rent and being homeless . I have anxiety so can only work in low paid environment such as gardening or working with young adults for Mencap which I do part voluntary. I receive the maximum amount of housing ben which pays half my rent the other half is met by the maintenance my X will be taking away. any advice please.

    Hi Heather10931,

It would be worth getting some legal advice about the settlement you have been offered. You can find information about free sources of legal help on our website here: https://www.gingerbread.org.uk/information/legal-help-and-responsibilities/getting-legal-help/.

You can also contact our free helpline to check you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to: https://www.gingerbread.org.uk/what-we-do/contact-us/helpline/
