    Morning,

    I have a question regarding CMS variation. Does anyone know if there is a “formula” used to calculate it?

    Trying to work out how much to discuss with my ex about paying monthly. Hopefully we can work it out privately.

    He is self employed but has dividens/shares etc so have no idea how much is “reasonable” to suggest.

    for private arrangement you can use the CMS calculator site to work out an amount: https://www.gov.uk/calculate-child-maintenance

    if he is willing to pay a reasonable amount, then hopefully that is good enough, and no need to look at variations.

    Hi, hope you manage to sort this amicably. The main two ways to focus on is he going to contribute weekly or will you split all child related costs. CMS advise line are very helpful in working the best option for you. Usually if it’s weekly it’s calculated at about 12% of wage, although will decrease depending on how many nights they paying parent keeps them over night, aswell as them having any other dependants. These payments are to cover everything so u can’t then ask them to help with unforeseen expenses, unless their willing to help out. Working out exact costs can be more complicated as you need to factor in everything, daily expenses, uniforms, clothes etc. And then u have to have trust in each other they will follow through with agreement when required. I tried to do so between myself and ex, but got CMS involved, initially direct pay so no fees involved but there was a legal agreement if he failed. It was best thing I done, as he was very inconsistent and having there agreement allowed me to back date payments when I had to enforce arrestment of wages. They calculated everything and was sorted in weeks, now I’m paid weekly and it’s a life changer x
