I’ve not had the most positive experience with child maintenance and from what I’ve read I’m assuming this is a common issue and I’m just wondering if anyone has got to see the light at the end of the long bleary tunnel.
My little boy is now 19 months old, whilst I was pregnant money issues became bigger and bigger with my ex-partner. We lived together at the time, he was meant to be running his own business but when my little boy was literally 3 hours old I started to realise how bad things were and how deep the lies ran. He had a huge hidden gambling addiction and within 7 weeks, I’d lost my home, car I had to sell all my belongings to pay back debt and he’d racked up £45,000 of debt under my name: he’d borrowed money off my friends and stolen £1000s from my parents. He then walked away, there were promises of paying it back and changing for the sake of our son, but within 4 months he’d met someone else and just left. I had to cancel my maternity leave and go back to support my baby. I contacted CMS in February 2018, they set up a direct payment of £61 a week, he never made a payment and we were put onto collect and pay. As he’s classed as self-employed they couldn’t collect from his salary, no luck with bank accounts, and now I’m waiting for a liability order to be granted but still doubt il get much luck. I don’t know where he lives, or his contact information: has anyone else got to this point?
I’m one of the moderators here at Gingerbread. Hopefully it won’t be too long before other parents are able to share their experiences with you. In the meantime it may be worth your while to contact our helpline. The advisers will be able to help you to explore your options.
