Hi. If anyone can help with my query I would be grateful. My 16 year old is considering leaving college and doing an apprenticeship. Currently I am on working tax credits and work part time, I have looked at universal credit but still feel unsure what I am able to claim. I read on turn to us that there are additional elements of universal credit such as the child element. However I am not certain if this covers a child doing an apprenticeship. If it does then it says that I can get a top up of over£200 but when I used the benefits calculator it said £80 per month. I’m just wondering if it is worth me applying for U.C. or not. Any help gratefully received. Thank you.

    Hi Rocket,

I’m one of the moderators at Gingerbread. It can be complicated in terms of benefits when a child leaves education and I would recommend speaking to a specialist adviser before making a decision. Details of the Gingerbread helpline are here: https://www.gingerbread.org.uk/what-we-do/contact-us/helpline/

One of our advisers can talk it through with you.
