Hi there guys thanks for listening.

I have recently separated from my ex and we have two young children. We do 50-50 custody so they are with us both 3.5 days a week. All of their expenses such as childcare, clubs etc are split down the middle between the two of us.

I spoke to Citizens advice about benefits and they told me that in a situation such as ours what would generally happen is one parent claims Universal Credit for one child and one for the other so you each get your share.

I have found out my ex is claiming for both and looks like she probably wont be sharing. Does anyone have any advice on this situation?

    Thank you so much

I would speak to her and let her know what you’ve been told. It’s completely fair and she really shouldn’t have a problem with it, as your childcare, contact and clubs are split down the middle.

Sadly communicating with her is not an option due to her poor behaviour and volatility so I was wondering what my options were without needing to rely on her thinking clearly

If that’s the case, then I’d apply for universal credit and explain the situation when applying. They should sort it out for you
