    Hi There,

I’m just wondering if anyone can help. I was working full time until hit and then my hours were reduced and I was part furloughed.
I was put on a zero hour contract in September. I was receiving Tax Credits and a small amount of housing benefit.

I made the decision to go to Uni full time in September with the intention of working around my Uni hours with my zero hour contract.

I was told I had to inform tax credits. I did so and my tax credits were stopped immediately as was my housing benefit. I was told to apply for universal credit.

I did this but Was told my zero hour contract wasn’t good enough and I had to commit to finding a 20 hour contracted position on top of my uni hours. I have one daughter at home and 2 in University:

I agreed to look for further work, I have been unsuccessful so far. I feel useless every time I visit my work coach. I waste £7 going to have a meeting with him despite the fact I’ve been tools I’m not entitled to any universal credit.

On top of this I’m now being charged a bedroom tax because I have 2 children at University and this means I have a spare room.

I have a maintenance loan which will cover most of my bills but I’m now down £110 a week in tax credits and £89 a fortnight housing benefit.

If I’m not entitled to further help fine! But surely I shouldn’t have to keep seeing a work coach if this is the case?

Thanks for anyone who can offer any help

    Hi MatureStudentMum,

I’m one of the forum moderators at Gingerbread.

As you are seeking advice on your benefit entitlements I would suggest that you call the Gingerbread Single Parent Helpline – Freephone 0808 802 0925

Opening hours: Mon 10-6, Tues 10-4, Wed 10-1 & 5-7 (but tomorrow 24th November the helpline will be closed between 5-7), Thurs 10-4, Fri 10-4  The helpline can be busy so callers can expect to wait before the call is answered.

    Best wishes,
