Fiona Weir, Chief Executive of Gingerbread said: "So, Sir Justice Coleridge is calling for a collective “new stigma” against single parents families. Isn’t this reinventing the wheel? 83 per cent of single parents surveyed by Gingerbread already say they are portrayed in a negative light. Contrary to fears for “Broken Britain,” the proportion of lone parent families has barely changed in the past ten years, but then neither have the misunderstandings about who single parents are and how they behave.

"People who bring up their children on their own are already portrayed as a succession of feckless and thoughtless teenage Vicki Pollards. The problem is not a lack of stigma, but its continued existence for 1.9 million single parents and their children."
