Gingerbread's Briefing Note on the Welfare Reform Bill

NB the Welfare Reform Bill was passed by Parliament recently and is now the Welfare Reform Act. This page will be updated soon.

The Welfare Reform Bill

  • contains provision for 'work for benefit' schemes,
  • contains provision for abolishing Income Support,
  • will mean that parents of children aged 3 and over have to prepare for work,
  • enables the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission to take away the driving licences and passports of parents who persistently fail to pay child maintenance,
  • and reforms the registration of births.

Gingerbread's latest views and suggestions are in the Briefing Note below from October 2009. You can also read an earlier briefing note from April 2009 whch explains the bill in detail and our press release from when the White Paper was first published.
