Child poverty map shows poor families need a break in the Budget
As new research reveals up to half of the children in some areas live in poverty, Gingerbread has urged the Chancellor to use his March Budget to reverse some of his most damaging cuts to family finances.
The study by the End Child Poverty coalition, of which Gingerbread is a member, maps rates of child poverty for every parliamentary constituency and local authority in the UK.
Gingerbead Chief Executive Fiona Weir said:
“The child poverty map shows just how many families in some areas are facing real hardship, in part because of recent cuts which have affected families with children particularly badly.
“Child poverty in George Osborne’s constituency might only be 10% but there are areas of our country where it’s five times as high. We urge him to use his forthcoming Budget to ease off families and set out a credible plan to bring down child poverty rates across the country.”
Children in single parent families are twice as likely to live in poverty as those in couple families.
