LOOKING FOR PEOPLE

BBC Radio in Derbyshire/East Staffordshire

I am looking for a single parent from Derbyshire/ East Staffordshire to come on our mid morning show & talk about being a single parent on either Wednesday 16th or Thursday 17th of May  - at around 9:15am.

We wish to discuss new research from single parents magazine One-Up that reveals that single parents & step families receive greater support from grandparents & friends than traditional families. It's not an easy ride, though: 84% of single mums a& dads and 71% of stepparents say they have overcome significant obstacles.

If anyone is interested I can be contacted on 01332 375001. If I am not available then my colleague Clare Cully will be the most appropriate person to speak to,

Widowers for a Magazine Feature

I'm currently writing a feature for a national women's weekly magazine about fathers who have been recently bereaved & I wondered if anyone can help me. I think this is a highly important issue & by highlighting it in our magazine, I hope to increase awareness & understanding.

Essentially, I am looking for two fathers to interview. The first father will have recently lost his partner (in the last year) & is now bringing up his children on his own. The second father will have lost his partner several years ago can therefore offer support & advice.

Each father would be interviewed over the phone & need to have their picture in the article & I will read the final draft back to each man to ensure that they are completely happy. Further, we will pay £150 to each father for their time & trouble. If you are interested in taking part please call me.

Middlesex University Video Project

We are a group of 5 MA student doing a short video project on Mothers day.
What we are actually doing is about a recent story that was on a lot of the newspapers around the UK from the Guardian to Daily Mail about the headmistress of one of a primary schools in Wales who had banned the making of Mother's day cards because she did not want to upset children without a mother.

We would like to speak to a single parent family, preferably a lone father with a child in primary school . It is quite urgent.
It would be useful for us to briefly interview the child and possibly the father.
Please contact

Guardian Family Section

I write for the Guardian Family section, which is in the paper on Saturdays, & I'm putting together a feature on what it's like to grow up without a father.  Do you know anyone - a teenager, or an adult - who grew up without contact with their dad, who might be willling to talk about what it was like & how it affected their life?  We hear so much about families where children have lost contact with their fathers, & we thought it would be interesting to find out what that experience is actually like from the inside.

Please contact me if you'd like to know more.  I am Joanna Moorhead at jmoorhead@dial.pipex.com; my phone number is 020 8675 3423

The Times

For our coverage of Gordon Brown's budget later this month, we're planning a series of case studies to illustrate how it will affect the pockets of a wide cross section of people.  We're desperately looking for a single parent to speak to. We'll need to ask for financial details to give to the number crunching accountants, who will work out whether you will be made better or worse off. But we won't print any details you'd be uncomfortable with. There will be a short interview about what you'd like to see in the budget & your thoughts on Gordon Brown, & it'll be run with a nice (and hopefully flattering!) photo, which we'd gladly send you a copy of as a thank you.

Help One Parent Families balance the media debate

Journalists often want to interview single parents for press, tv & radio stories about one parent family life. It could be that they’re reporting a news story about tax credits or the CSA, or writing a feature about childcare & the work/life balance. One Parent Families’ 'media database' includes single parents who are willing, in principle, to be interviewed. Would you like to join?  If you’re happy to be named & have your pic in the paper or on TV & would like the chance to talk about the reality of life as a single parent, let us know.  Your contact details would not be given to journalists without your prior permission & you would be briefed by our press officer before being interviewed. You can find out more about what’s involved by emailing our press officer jane@oneparentfamilies.org.uk.
