Extra Support for Teenage Mothers
Amanda Ball, Chief Executive, commented:
‘Gingerbread welcomes the positive approach adopted by the government towards supporting teenage mothers and their children through the provision of registered childcare and parenting support so that they can return to or continue training and education.
Raising educational achievement and living standards is absolutely fundamental to ensuring that both the mother and child build their self-confidence, achieve their aspirations and are able to participate fully in society.
We also hope that this proposal will encourage an end to a punitive attitude to young mothers, which was so prevalent in the early and mid-1990’s and which did nothing to prevent teenage pregnancy nor to resolve the problems of teenage mothers struggling to bring up their children with meagre resources’.
