I suddenly became a lone parent with two children (Donna-Marie 4 and Darren 18 months), back in 1985, following the death of my wife, Linda

As you can imagine my whole life changed and whilst I came to terms with the bereavement, financial implications and everything else, I realised both I and the children needed support to rebuild our lives. So I turned to the local Gingerbread group and the emotional and practical support I have received over many years, has saved my life many times!

I have been able to talk to people in a similar position and the children have found this so beneficial as well. They could escape the bullying they often suffered at school and actually have an enjoyable social life with friends where we all felt safe and didn't have to keep explaining our situation.

Through Gingerbread, I also found employment in my current job, following redundancy. The many additional skills I learnt as a lone parent and the fact that I rebuilt my confidence and self esteem, playing an active role in my local group, led me directly to my job in Home-Start Dover District.

Gingerbread has been my life-line, my sanity, my hope, throughout many lonely years.
