Letter from a single mum
One woman has written to her MP for the first time, after the prime minister's comments on single mums and “runaway dads.” She contacted Gingerbread and gave her permission for us to publish her letter. Here it is:
I am moved to write my first letter to my MP following Mr Cameron's description today of single mothers like myself as “heroic,” she writes. It's unpleasant being patronised at the best of times, but when the sentiment is so transparently insincere and cynical, it becomes intolerable.
To call us heroic, while proposing to charge mothers (and it is mainly mothers) who cannot get their ex-partners to pay maintenance for the privilege of access to Child Support Agency services, is the height of humbug.
I would be very interested to hear your justification for taking an upfront charge of £100 plus an ongoing charge of 7 - 12% of the money rightfully due to them from women who find themselves and their children suffering financially. I work part-time because I am devoted to the care of my small son. My annual salary is £14k. These charges would represent an awful lot of money to me - but not to a rich woman. The service will therefore become inaccessible to the very people who need it most.
My guess is that the Tories believe that single mothers are generally too poor and inarticulate to fight back, and are unlikely to vote Tory in any case. A soft target.
Can you honestly tell me that you believe that struggling women and children are the best people to attack in the cause of deficit reduction?
I await your response with interest.
Why not write to your own MP about the government’s double standards on this?
